What your bill pays for

The below is a general guide to show where $100 goes in the 2023/24 financial year.

What your money pays for

Of every $100, about $45 is spent on water and sewer services – this relates to the 16 water treatment and 14 water reclamation plants that we operate. We’re embarking on our Big Water Build capital program, which is a five-year program of time-critical infrastructure upgrades and renewals to underpin our region’s prosperity and help us address the challenges we face.

Almost $30 is spent on maintaining our ‘hidden network’ of water and sewer mains. We have more than 2,300 kilometres of water mains and 2,036 kilometres of sewer mains.

We use $2.54 of every $100 on maintenance of three major reservoirs near Kyneton, which are Upper Coliban, Malmsbury and Lauriston. These supply water to Kyneton, Castlemaine, Bendigo and rural customers, our water entitlement to the Murray and Goulburn systems, and we have an 18 per cent share of volume in Lake Eppalock.

The $13.28 includes technology to help monitor our networks, labour costs, office rental, electricity and overheads.

We use $5.12 to cover the cost of customer support functions, staff, and metering and billing systems.

In addition to our stewardship of the environment through our everyday working practices, we use $4.74 of every $100 to contribute to the state government fund to support high priority environmental projects across Victoria.
