We’ve decided to pause the demolition works at a point where part of the Echuca Water Tower structure can be safely retained.
The project has progressed to a point where the immediate safety risks posed by the tower have been addressed. Pausing the works at this stage allows road closures and traffic management arrangements to be removed earlier than anticipated, with roads expected to reopen as early as Friday 23 October 2026, subject to weather and site conditions.
This decision has been informed by the impacts road closures have on local businesses, residents and visitors. During early engagement, business owners highlighted the importance of the pre-Christmas trading period and the need to minimise disruption during this critical time for Echuca's economy.
By pausing works now, we can reopen surrounding roads sooner, reduce disruption during the important pre-Christmas period and provide time to consider the most appropriate long-term outcome for the site.
If, following discussions with Council and other stakeholders, there is no appetite to retain part of the structure, Coliban Water will return at a later date to complete the demolition and remove the remaining structure.
Importantly, any remaining works can be completed using a different traffic management approach and equipment, significantly reducing impacts on traffic, local businesses and the broader community.
