Update, 1.25am: Coliban Water advises that customers in Cohuna should boil their drinking water until further notice.
This advisory comes following a burst water main in Cohuna yesterday evening. Our crews are still working to repair this water main.
The burst resulted in a supply interruption for Cohuna customers. The drop in pressure may have also resulted in ingress into the system and compromised the safety of the drinking water. As part of our response, we have notified the Department of Health.
When water supply is restored, customers should boil their drinking water until further notice.
Coliban Water advises customers to bring water to a rolling boil before being used by heating the water until a continuous and rapid stream of air-bubbles is produced from the bottom of a pan or kettle. Kettles with automatic cut-off switches are suitable. Variable temperature kettles should be set to boil.
After heating, water must be allowed to cool before using it and stored in a clean, closed container for later use. Care should be taken to avoid scalding injuries especially around children.
Boiled water can be used for:
- drinking
- preparing beverages
- washing and preparing food
- preparing baby formula
- brushing teeth
- making ice
Unboiled water can be used for washing your hands, showering and bathing, flushing toilets, washing clothes and dishes (ensure dry before use), and garden watering. Ensure water is not ingested whilst bathing.
To assist our customers in Cohuna, we will set up drinking water trailers at locations in the town. These locations will be confirmed and communicated shortly.
Consumption of unboiled water can cause gastro-like symptoms. If you experience any of these symptoms, please contact your GP and inform your GP of this advisory.
Please share this advice with neighbours and friends in the affected area. If you are the owner of a rented property, please ensure tenants are aware of this advisory.
We will provide more information here and on Facebook as the situation changes.
