Wet spring puts water storages in good stead for summer
Coliban Water’s storages are at 100 percent capacity following a wet spring, putting the region in a strong position leading into the summer months.
Executive General Manager Climate and Population Adaptation Steve Healy said both Coliban Water’s storages near Kyneton, as well as the Coliban Share of Lake Eppalock were at 100 percent.
“Spring rainfall at Malmsbury Reservoir was over 248 millimetres, which is around 54 millimetres more than the long-term historical average,” Mr Healy said
“We are holding 10,424 megalitres more in storage than we were for the same time last year, and the outlook is favourable for the months ahead.
The figures are robust across the board including Lake Eppalock.
“Coliban Water has received 100 percent allocations for 2020/21 in all source water systems except the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline where we have carried over allocation to secure supply.”
But the organisation is reminding customers not to become complacent, as we continue to face the challenges of climate and population change.
“Permanent Water Saving Rules are in place across our region and everything we do to conserve water – even in the cooler months – helps overall water security.
“Water security is a major component of the Urban Water Strategy, with engagement currently underway to determine future priorities for the region.
“We’ve collected data from our customers and stakeholders that has been crucial for our planning. Now we’re presenting our ideas and gathering feedback to guide our projects forward.
“To secure our water future, we must understand what trade-offs our communities are willing to make so we can sustainably deliver water and wastewater services to them. We forecast that we will not have enough water to meet long-term future demand without changing our current strategy.
“Using our online engagement website Connect Coliban, customers now have the opportunity to learn about our plans and projects and have their say on what’s to come in their town,” Mr Healy said.
