Coliban Water has removed the water quality warning from Campbells Creek, following the completion of improvement works at the Castlemaine Water Reclamation Plant.
Executive General Manager Water Quality, David Sheehan, said that the plant is now operating as normal and the quality of the treated wastewater being discharged to Campbells Creek is in line with Environmental Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) licence requirements.
“We are continuing to discuss with local farmers, and other downstream users, their water usage from Campbells Creek into the future. Even though the warning is no longer in place, Campbells Creek is like any other small waterway that flows through both urban and rural areas, in that it can be impacted by its surroundings. For this reason, swimming in the creek is not encouraged,” he said.
It is important to note that in drier months releases from the Castlemaine Water Reclamation Plant are often the sole source of water in the creek.
“In collaboration with relevant regulatory agencies, we are considering other measures that would assist in the ongoing education of the local community about water flows within Campbells Creek,” Mr Sheehan said.
