Improvements to the Laanecoorie water supply network will take place in the form of water mains cleaning from Monday 17 February 2020.

Coliban Water Manager Customer Operations Steve Dunlop said the three-month program will focus on four towns west of Bendigo - Laanecoorie, Bealiba, Dunolly and Tarnagulla.

“Customers in these towns have been notified by mail of the works, which may cause a slight change in the taste and odour of the drinking water, such as a short-term increase in chlorine taste.

“The cleaning will not impact the flow or pressure of supply and the drinking water will be safe to drink. The taste and odour will return to normal following the cleaning,” Mr Dunlop said.

The works are part of Coliban Water's wider program of annual cleaning works to maintain the integrity of the region’s water supply network by removing sediment build up and ensuring good disinfection levels.

“We will be using a method known as free chlorination. Chlorination is needed to ensure the water supply continues to be safe to drink and meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines,” Mr Dunlop said.

“Maintaining chlorine levels throughout the network is important. It protects against contamination as the water travels through our mains to customers’ properties, after being treated at our water treatment plant.

“The water meets the requirements of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. The water is also safe for your pets to drink.

“Customers should seek advice from their local pet shop with regard to aquariums. They may need to review their treatment process of the water due to this change.

“Chlorine sensitivity can be a concern for a very small number of people. If customers believe they are sensitive to chlorine, they can fill a jug with water and place it in the fridge for at least one hour to allow the taste of chlorine to dissipate,” Mr Dunlop said.
