Following more than 12 months of online webinars, videos and activities, the Coliban Water education program is excited to return to schools and kindergartens in term 2.

Executive General Manager Customer, Community and Stakeholder Affairs Lauren McLean said community education is a critical part of raising the next generation of water saving heroes.

“Our 30-minute Water Hero kindergarten session is a collection of water-themed stories, songs and science experiments delivered by our caped education officer, Water Hero Alice,” Ms McLean said.

“Children learn about the water cycle and how to use water carefully. Children are encouraged to become water heroes at home and kinder, taking responsibility for water-saving and drinking enough water.

“We know that our population is growing and our climate is changing. It is critical for us to work with the community on their water literacy so they can be better informed on how we can use tap water, tank water and recycled water to meet our needs now and into the future,” she said.

Education visits have been adapted to be Covidsafe, whilst still providing an interactive experience for participants.

“As grateful as we are to be back in kindergartens and schools, we have prioritised safety and adapted our sessions accordingly. We require venues to provide a Covidsafe plan prior to the visit, and sessions take place outside or in well ventilated large spaces.

“Whilst we once promoted our ‘hands-on’ sessions, now children are kept engaged and learning with songs, stories and demonstrations. The feedback has been great; children and teachers love the catchy songs and activities,” Ms McLean said.

The water hero theme has been popular with children, with many taking turns to be the Water Hero of the Week, with a cape provided by Coliban Water.

In term 2 there will be more than 60 sessions at 33 kindergartens and schools in Echuca, Trentham, Kyneton, Heathcote, Lockington and Bendigo.

“Our education program is now fully booked for Term 2, and we are encouraging kindergartens, schools and community groups to book in for Term 3 and 4.”
