A section of Pakenham Street in Echuca will be closed to traffic next week to allow urgent sewer main relining works to take place.

Coliban Water Manager Customer Operations Steve Dunlop said a recent routine inspection of the 150 milllimetre sewer main showed a section that was at risk of failure.

Works are planned to begin Monday 22 March and finish Friday 26 March, and may include some night works.

“We have experienced some delays in getting these works started but we now hope to complete the works prior to the Easter break,” Mr Dunlop said.

“Rain is forecast next week so we are hopeful this does not delay the works. We will keep local business owners updated if plans change.”

Mr Dunlop said Coliban Water’s proactive camera inspection program recently found the sewer main to have significant corrosion and poor structural integrity.

“That’s why we need to carry out these relining works immediately to ensure there is no interruption of sewer services to the community.

“Our priority is to ensure ongoing provision of sewer services to our customers, which means that leaving the sewer main in its current condition is not an option,” Mr Dunlop said.

Pakenham Street will be closed in both directions for the duration of the works, between Hare and Nish streets. Traffic management will be in place.

Road closure dates may be extended if excavation reveals further work is required.

Normal sewer services will continue while the works are underway.

“The dig site is near the front of Westpac Bank on Pakenham Street, near the intersection with Hare Street, so you will see our crews in the area,” Mr Dunlop said.

“The relining works are carried out by our contractor Interflow, who plan to use a spiral bound plastic system to reline the inside of the pipe.

“This will give it structural integrity for the next 60 years.

“I want to thank everyone for their patience and we hope to complete these works as quickly as we can,” Mr Dunlop said.
