Water storages within the Coliban River catchment are holding steady as we enter winter, despite a drier autumn.
Executive General Manager Strategy Anna Lamont said the combined storage volume of Upper Coliban, Lauriston and Malmsbury Reservoirs is at 77%.
“We received 136 millimetres of rain at Malmsbury Reservoir during autumn, which is well below the long-term average. As a result, inflows to our storages were lower.
“However, our storages do not generally receive significant inflows over autumn,” said Ms Lamont.
“We are also holding 52,239 megalitres in Lake Eppalock.
“These reserves put us in a good position for this time of year, with a favourable outlook for the seasons ahead,” she said.
Coliban Water has eight separate water supply systems across its region, each with a different supply source and level of water security, all reliant on winter and spring rainfall or groundwater.
While acknowledging the storages collectively hold 1.5 gigalitres less than this time last year, Ms Lamont said forecasts are looking good for our catchment.
“Forecast allocations for 2024/25 from Goulburn-Murray Water are very good, but as always, we are carefully monitoring and managing our resources.
Despite a positive outlook, Ms Lamont is reminding customers to keep water conservation front of mind.
“Permanent Water Saving Rules are in place across our region and everything we do to conserve water – even in the cooler months – helps overall water security.”
Practical ways to avoid waste when watering gardens and lawns include using a hand-held hose with a trigger nozzle or using a watering system between 6pm and 10am.
“Using water efficiently is everyone’s responsibility to help secure our water supplies and contribute to healthy Country and communities.
