Students in our region are invited to apply for Coliban Water’s Vacation Program 2019/20 – which offers a chance to gain practical workplace experience in the water industry.

Coliban Water General Manager People and Safety Gretel Bowman-Farr said the 10-week program for university students runs over the summer holidays from December 2019 through to March 2020.

“The Vacation Program, now in its eighth year, provides a unique insight for students to learn about our business and the practical day-to-day work we carry out.

“It provides exciting opportunities across a range of business functions including roles in service and infrastructure, water quality, innovation, our customer and community department, finance, human resources, governance and communications,” Ms Bowman-Farr said.

“Vacation Program opportunities are based on business needs. For students, this is a fantastic opportunity for personal and professional development.”

Participating students will have an opportunity to spend a week as part of the Headworks Team based at Lauriston Reservoir near Kyneton; have a guided tour of a water reclamation plant and water treatment plant; and spend half a day on a water or sewer truck.

Ms Bowman-Farr said Coliban Water was seeking applicants who were in the third or fourth year of their university degree, have a positive attitude and willingness to learn, have a high level of interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and who possess a genuine passion for the water industry.

Former Vacation Program student Angus Bowles now works in a full time role at Coliban Water as an Operations Engineer. He is currently Acting Urban Services Manager.

“There were so many benefits to this program – I was able to gain first-hand industry experience and learn from others outside of an academic environment.

“I was lucky enough to help deliver a works project during my placement and see it in action. Following the program, I had a clearer idea of what I wanted to do with my career. Not only that, I met a number of people and made several close friends.

“I encourage those considering this program to apply,” Mr Bowles said.

The program includes two weeks off over the Christmas and New Year period. For more information visit the careers page the Coliban Water website at www.coliban.com.au or apply online at careers.vic.gov.au.

Applications can be submitted with a covering letter and resume by 5pm Friday 6 September 2019.
