New prices from 1 July for Coliban Water customers

New prices being released by Coliban Water from Monday 1 July will continue to support the customer-funded water corporation’s largest ever program of capital upgrades and asset renewals.

In releasing the updated fees and charges, Managing Director Damian Wells said Coliban Water has worked hard to strike the right balance between building sustainable, modern infrastructure for future generations, while being fair to customers today.

“Many of the water and sewage assets we manage on behalf of our customers date back to the goldrush. This infrastructure is ageing and is being increasingly tested by our region’s growing population and the impacts of climate change.

“Just like the other things we own (our homes or cars), our water infrastructure requires regular investment and renewal.

“As a 100% customer-funded business with every single one of our customers contributing to these projects through their water bills, it’s our responsibility to use this money prudently to maintain and upgrade vital community water and sewer assets for the next 50 years,” Mr Wells explained.

On 1 July, Coliban Water will enter year two of its 2023-2028 pricing period.

“Our pricing pathway has been approved by the Essential Services Commission (ESC), and will see prices increase in a phased approach,” Mr Wells said.

Most water and sewer prices will increase by 6.2% this year. This figure consists of a price adjustment of 2.5% endorsed by the ESC, plus inflation.

For the average owner-occupier, bills will increase by approximately $1.74 per week (including inflation) to $1,562.15 per year. This time last year, the average owner-occupier household received a bill increase of approximately $2.11 per week.

The average bill for a renter will increase by approximately 56 cents per week to $498.18 per year, as renters only pay for usage, not water or sewer access charges.

Fees for rural customers will increase by less than inflation, with most charges increasing by 2.3%. This increase is less than last year, when rural charges increased by 5.7%.

Mr Wells stressed that while prices would increase from 1 July, Coliban Water is aware many in the community are feeling the effects of the increasing cost of living and there would be continued financial support available for customers requiring assistance.

“We are now providing $570,000 a year until 2028 to fund the Coliban Assist program.

“Our Customer Support Team is trained to provide confidential advice, support, or referral to other services. If you are experiencing difficulty paying you water bill, are experiencing family violence, or require other support, I encourage you to speak with our team.”

Full details on the new 2024/25 fees and charges, as well as a list of works delivered in the 2023/24 financial year, will be available from Monday at www.coliban.com.au.
