Coliban Water has congratulated La Trobe University on the opening of its Bendigo Engineering and Technology Building.

Coliban Water Acting Managing Director Neville Pearce says the new facility will only strengthen the long-standing relationship between the two organisations.

“Coliban Water is a major employer of La Trobe University graduates. These are people who want to forge a successful career in the region and we’re able to provide a vast range of experience for them to kick off that career.

“La Trobe graduates bring to us fresh ideas, innovation and a new way of looking at things, so it really is a mutually beneficial relationship,” Mr Pearce said.

The Graduate Program duration can be up to nine years, in which the employees complete 12 months in each of Coliban Water’s key operational areas such as Infrastructure Delivery and Water Quality Supply.

“These graduates not only see the areas they specialize in, but are required to complete external rotations with our strategic partners including Veolia and Lendlease, so they really do see the full extent of our operations and gain valuable experience and expertise,” Mr Pearce said.

Each year Coliban Water also hosts students as part of the Work Integrated Learning program, in which students gain six months practical experience in an industry setting.

Ranjith Muniraju is a student participating in the program. He says it’s giving him hands on skills he can graduate with.

“I’ve been able to go out on site with the engineers and see projects up close. We also get the chance to do 3D modelling and experience other facets of the business. I couldn’t get this kind of knowledge from a classroom alone,” Mr Muniraju said.

Mr Pearce says the new facilities at La Trobe University will further bolster the Engineering and Technology programs and the benefits will flow on into the water industry.

“I myself am a La Trobe graduate, as are several of our other senior managers. It goes to show that students are the future of our organisation and there’s great opportunities for career growth within Coliban Water,” Mr Pearce said.
