If your water bill is much higher than you expected, you're probably wondering why you're using so much water.
The first thing to do is check whether you have a leak.
If you don't have a leak, there may be other reasons why it's higher than usual. Minor changes in your daily life can impact your overall water use, such as:
- extra people in the house
- using the washing machine more often
- watering the garden more due to hot weather
- having a new pool or lawn recently installed
- using appliances that aren't very water efficient.
These activities can easily increase the amount of water you're using daily.
Read your meter
The black digits show how many kilolitres (1000 litres) you've used.
The white digits record hundreds of litres, tens of litres and litres respectively.
Monitor your water use
A good way to understand your water use is to monitor it to see which activities use the most water.
You can do this by regularly reading your water meter and recording how you're using water each day.
- Read your meter at approximately the same time each day. Make sure you take note of both the black and red numbers. Jot down what you've used water for that day, for example, doing the laundry, watering the garden or cleaning the pool.
- Calculate your daily water use by deducting the previous day's reading from today's reading.
- Compare your daily water use.
This will give you a snapshot of your daily water use, which is a good starting point if you want to reduce it.
