Focusing on sustainability and the environment this National Water Week
The importance of sustainable water use will be the focus of events and activations across the region for Coliban Water as they celebrate this year’s National Water Week (21-27 October) in the community.
“During this National Water Week, we want everyone to learn more about how they can contribute to a sustainable water future in our region,” said Executive General Manager Customer and Stakeholder Experience Lauren McLean.
“Conserving and valuing water is not just for our benefit, but also for the environment. This includes the diverse plants and animals that rely on healthy waterways and catchments for their survival” Ms McLean said.
The week will see staff visiting schools and communities across the region, including throughout Bendigo, Echuca, and Kyneton, with the week culminating in a free event for families at Bendigo Library on Friday October 25, from 4-6pm.
Alongside Coliban Water, the evening will bring together organisations such as the North Central Catchment Management Authority (NCCMA), the City of Greater Bendigo, Swamps, Rivers and Ranges Inc, and Smiles4Miles.
Attendees will learn about where their drinking water comes from, as well as enjoy a special children’s story-time featuring an appearance from the Coliban Water mascot, Tap. Kids can then get ‘hands-on’ with water bugs thanks to the River Detectives program from the NCCMA.
The biodiversity team from the City of Greater Bendigo will be there, sharing information about water plants, waterbirds and other animals that rely on wetland habitats. Swamps, Rivers and Ranges Inc will have some ‘froggy’ activities, and Smiles4miles will feature their engaging ‘Magi Z Dragon’.
“We’ve aimed to create something for everyone who takes the time to celebrate water with us this National Water Week. There are games and activities for kids, information, and education, as well as some sustainable giveaways, all to help them engage with and value water,” Ms McLean said.
The fun doesn’t stop there, as Coliban Water will also be promoting their ‘Find a Fountain’ campaign throughout October. The campaign asks customers to help them fill the Choose Tap! Map with their favourite spots to hydrate throughout the region. Contributors can snap a photo with their go-to fountain and upload this to the map on their website, with every upload receiving a special prize.
“We know that drinking tap water from a reusable drink bottle is the most sustainable way to keep hydrated. And there are water refill opportunities across our community, but you might not know where,” Ms McLean said.
“The amount of water that actually goes into making a plastic bottle can be up six times what's actually inside the bottle you drink, so choosing to reuse, avoiding single-use plastic, is the best choice for the environment,” she said.
