Echuca Water Tower removal works are progressing

Work is progressing to safely remove the Echuca Water Tower, with the project expected to continue until late November 2026.

A key milestone was reached on Thursday 9 July, with a crane arriving on site to support the next stage of works. The crane will help complete the remaining upper section of the freestanding scaffold structure before being used to carefully dismantle the tower, with sections progressively cut, prepared for lifting, and lowered to trucks below.

The decision to remove the tower was made in November 2025 after an independent structural assessment found deterioration in the tower’s concrete structure posed a potential safety risk for the community, contractors, and staff.

Coliban Water subsequently decommissioned the tower in April and transitioned the Echuca water network to a modern pressurised system, using a series of booster pumps to maintain reliable water pressure.

A safe and staged approach

Coliban Water’s General Manager Operations, Julian Bull, said the tower’s size and structure meant its removal needed to be carefully managed.

“A secure worksite is in place, and a large freestanding scaffold will give crews with safe access to prepare the tower for removal.

“A nearby section of powerlines has been temporarily removed to support the work and make room for the crane.

“We’ll continue to make every effort to minimise noise, dust, and disruption throughout the project,” Mr Bull said.

Traffic changes and work hours

Pakenham Street will be temporarily closed between High Street and Hare Street, and southbound traffic on High Street will be reduced to one lane.

Mr Bull said the changed traffic arrangements will remain in place until late November with work on site taking place Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm, with occasional Saturday work between 7am and 3pm.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the road closures. Pedestrian access to local businesses remains available and traders are operating as normal. We encourage the community to keep supporting them,” he said.
