Coliban Water will be undertaking a second round of maintenance works on the Echuca Water Tower this week to add to the safety of the historic structure.
Manager Infrastructure Corey Bourne said a detailed assessment was undertaken following initial works in June, which identified further works to be completed.
“Our contractors identified loose material around the outside of the tower, so we’ll conduct further safety knocks to ensure the tower remains safe into the future.
“It was important that we got it right before removing the scaffolding; community safety is our highest priority,” Mr Bourne said.
A condition assessment completed in December 2018 found that while the reinforced concrete tower was structurally sound, some non-structural sections of the protective coating had deteriorated over time.
The works will be conducted between Wednesday 6 and Saturday 9 November, 2019.
The west-bound lane of Pakenham Street, closest to the tower, will be closed to traffic from 6am to 5pm on Thursday 7 November and reopen after 5pm.
Traffic management will be in place during the works and there will be no interruption to the town water supply.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to pedestrians and motorists during this time.
“We will undertake a full assessment soon after the remedial works to ensure it is safe to remove the scaffolding,” Mr Bourne said.
The second round of works are not connected to the tower spilling in mid-September.
Coliban Water contractors were called to the tower on 13 September after a fault in the communications equipment caused it to overflow.
“We have finished a thorough investigation of this issue and final repairs will be undertaken at the same time as these maintenance works, to minimise disruption to the community,” Mr Bourne said.
