Two Bendigo schools are the first winners in Coliban Water’s Share. Inspire. Save. competition which showcases and rewards water efficient schools in its region.
Executive General Manager Customer, Community & Stakeholder Affairs Kerry Noonan said it has been great to see schools’ water saving initiatives and share their ideas.
“Congratulations to Quarry Hill and St Francis of the Fields primary schools, our first two Share. Inspire. Save. winners,” said Ms Noonan.
“Both schools shared great water saving ideas in videos and photos. The ideas included putting timers on taps, installing rainwater tanks for watering gardens and plants, and putting buckets under bubble taps to collect water to reuse in the garden.
“We have shared the videos and photos on our Facebook page and included links to them in our Education Newsletter, which is emailed to every school in our region.
“The aim of Share. Inspire. Save. is to inspire other teachers and students to adopt these water saving initiatives at their school and help them save water and money.
“Educating students to be water efficient is an important lesson as we face the challenges of climate change and population growth. We hope it is a lesson they take with them for the rest of their lives,” said Ms Noonan.
The schools have won a three-year membership to the Schools Water Efficiency Program (SWEP), a Victorian Government program that enables schools to track their water usage through a fun and educational online platform. By monitoring water usage, schools can detect and rectify leaks.
“SWEP has helped schools in Victoria save more than six billion litres of water, which would have cost more than $18.3 million in water charges,” said Ms Noonan.
“In the Coliban Water region, SWEP has helped save more than 281 million litres of water and around $654,400 in charges.
“We hope more schools in our region will hear about SWEP through our competition and sign up to the program. And it’s not too late to enter our Share. Inspire. Save. competition for the chance to win a three-year membership. The entries for the next round closes on Friday 20 March 2020.
“Schools can submit as many entries as they like for more chances to win and we encourage all the schools in our region to take part,” said Ms Noonan.
Entrants are required to share their schools water saving initiatives by posting a photograph or video to Coliban Water’s Share. Inspire. Save. Facebook page, explaining how their school is saving water.
