Wastewater

Sewage

Sewage from Castlemaine, Campbells Creek, Chewton, Harcourt, Newstead and Maldon flows through an extensive sewerage system to the Castlemaine Water Reclamation Plant (WRP).

The sewerage system also collects trade waste from commercial sites.

What happens at the water reclamation plant

The WRP produces treated Class C recycled water through a series of processes including screening, biological nutrient removal, aeration, chemical dosing, clarification and UV disinfection.

Treated water is used for irrigation at the Castlemaine Golf Club and release into Campbells Creek as use for dust suppression and construction works has ceased.

Biosolids are also treated and used on farmland for the nutrients.
