The Coliban Water System in the Murray-Darling Basin will get the opportunity to improve efficiency and reduce water loss thanks to a $3.7 million investment by the Albanese Labor Government.
This detailed business case will help pave the way for Coliban Water to look at options to modernise the water distribution network, and as a result, increase water supply for the region.
This will include investigating where water loss is occurring, identifying preferred water efficiency solutions, and proposing options for how the water recovered may be used.
It is estimated that an improvement project could save up to 6.76 gigalitres of water a year.
Local irrigators, the Murray-Darling community and nature could all benefit through more water for the local environment and crops, leading to a boost for agriculture and industry.
The detailed business case for the Coliban Regional Rural Modernisation Project will build on the findings of the preliminary business case, completed in late 2022.
The Dja Dja Wurrung Aboriginal Corporation (DJAARA) played an important role in the preliminary business case in ensuring thorough consideration of cultural heritage.
This funding will be complemented by a local investment of $2 million by Coliban Water.
