Coliban Water has today pleaded guilty in the Kyneton Magistrates Court to the charge of creating an environmental hazard in relation to a sewer spill that occurred at Kyneton in July 2016.

The sewer spill was a result of a burst on the sewer main that transfers the town’s wastewater from the Jeffrey Street Sewer Pump Station to the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant for treatment.

The Court determined not to record a conviction or fine in relation to this matter, and instead accepted a submission for an alternative sentence to be imposed.

Today’s outcome will see Coliban Water contributing $100,000 toward an Aboriginal Waterways Assessment along part of the Campaspe River, which was the waterway affected by the incident.

The work will be undertaken by the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation and a project plan will be developed over the coming months. Coliban Water will provide the funds to the corporation by 31 March 2019.

Further information on the works will become available on the Coliban Water website www.coliban.com.au
