In cold weather, the water inside your meter and pipes can freeze, causing them to burst. To stop them from freezing, cover your water meter with an upturned bucket or cardboard box. This way, your water meter is still accessible for maintenance and reading every three months. If we can’t safely access your water meter, an estimated read will appear on your bill.

Meters with data loggers (digital meters)

If you have had a data logger added to your meter as part of our Digital Metering Program, you will also have had a protective cover installed to protect your meter from frost and not interfere with the signal the transmits the data. Please don’t cover it with anything else.

What to do if your meter is frozen

If your meter or pipes freeze the best solution is to wait for the temperature to rise and for the water inside to naturally unfreeze. You can also pour lukewarm water over the frozen areas. Never use boiling or hot water as this can cause your meter or pipes to burst.

If your meter or pipes burst, turn off your water supply using the stop tap and contact our customer support team on 1300 363 200 or email coliban@coliban.com.au.
