Autumn rainfall has resulted in Coliban Water’s storages sitting at 80 per cent capacity – up four per cent from the same time last year.

Executive General Manager Strategy Jarrah O’Shea said the wetter-than-average conditions through autumn meant good inflows for the three catchment storages of Upper Coliban, Lauriston and Malmsbury reservoirs.

“We received 210mm of rain at Malmsbury, which is similar to last year and well above the long-term average,” he said.

“Overall, we are holding 3.3 gigalitres more in storage than at the same time last year.

“These reserves place us in a very good position for this time of the year with a favourable outlook for the seasons ahead,” Mr O’Shea said.

Water captured by the three reservoirs during March, April and May almost matched the 2022 autumn total with 2,278 megalitres of inflows received.

In total the Upper Coliban, Lauriston and Malmsbury Reservoirs are now holding 55,433ML – or 80 per cent of their capacity.

Coliban Water’s share of Lake Eppalock is currently at 94 per cent (51,461ML) following autumn rainfall.

Despite strong storages ahead of winter, people should continue following Permanent Water Saving Rules.

“These rules are in place across our region and everything we do to conserve water – even in the cooler months – helps overall water security.

“Using water efficiently is everyone’s responsibility to help secure our water supplies and maintain greener and more liveable communities now and into the future. Water saving ideas for the home, business and garden can be found on our website.”

Mr O’Shea said ensuring our local water catchments are able to deal with climate change pressures and regional growth was important moving forward.

“We must focus on these challenges and invest in our region,” he said.
