Do you know how water gets to your tap? Or what happens after you flush the toilet? The movement of water for human use is called the urban water cycle. Scroll or click 'Next' to experience the urban water cycle.
How is the urban water cycle different to the natural water cycle?
A reservoir is a large lake used to store water. The lake may be natural or made by building a dam wall over a river.
Some towns use groundwater for their water supply. Groundwater is water found underground in the spaces within soil and between rocks.
Raw water collected from rivers, reservoirs and groundwater storages may contain dirt and germs. Water is cleaned at a water treatment plant to make it safe to drink.
Safe drinking water is piped from the water treatment plant to taps. We look after 2,378 kilometres of drinking water pipes. Laid end-to-end, the pipes would connect Bendigo to Far North Queensland.

Wastewater is the used water from toilets, showers, baths, sinks and washing machines. Most households produce about 28 buckets of wastewater per person each day! We look after the pipes that remove wastewater from homes and other buildings.
Wastewater is not wasted! After spending time at a water reclamation plant, wastewater becomes useful for a range of purposes.
Biosolids are the treated sludge from wastewater. The biosolids are collected and applied to farmland to improve the soil.
Recycled water is wastewater that has been treated so it can be reused for other purposes. Some parks and sports fields are watered with recycled water. Some recycled water is transported in purple pipes.
We have reached the end of this urban water journey. The water will keep moving through the natural and urban water cycles. Coliban Water will keep managing water for community members to live, grow and enjoy.
