Tarnagulla is a gold mining town in central Victoria approximately 13 kilometres north west of Laanecoorie and 47 kilometres from Bendigo in the Loddon Shire local government area. The population is around 150 people.

European settlement in the area began with the taking up of Tarnagulla station in the 1840s.

In 1853, the first gold nuggets were found near Tarnagulla at Nuggetty Gully.

Water supply

The Laanecoorie system serves the township of Tarnagulla, Laanecoorie, Dunolly and Bealiba and is part of the Loddon System.

The water supply system serves both residential, commercial and industrial customers of Tarnagulla with around 120 connections.

Raw water comes from the Loddon River at Laanecoorie.

For further water resource information on the Loddon System see our monthly Water Summaries.

Water treatment

The raw water is pumped to the Laanecoorie Water Treatment plant which is located about 3 kilometres west of the town itself.

Water is treated by flocculation, clarification, filtration and pH correction. If necessary blue-green algae is extracted by means of a carbon filter. The water is then chloraminated before storage in clearwater tanks adjacent to the treatment plant.

The treated water is pumped from Laanecoorie to a tank in Tarnagulla which holds up to 650 kilolitres and then gravity fed to the township's reticulation system.
