Tooborac

Tooborac is a town in Victoria. The town is in the Mitchell Shire local government area, 107 kilometres
north of the state capital, Melbourne.  It has a population of around 400 people .

Tooborac Post Office opened on 1 January 1872.

Tooborac has recently undergone a resurgence with the renovation of the Tooborac Hotel and the construction of a craft brewery. The 150-year-old, two-storey bluestone and ironstone hotel is a meeting place for locals and travellers alike.

Water supply

The Coliban System (Northern) serves the local population including commercial and industrial customers with around 1,150 connections.

Raw water for the townships of Heathcote and Tooborac is sourced from Lake Eppalock. Water is pumped from Lake Eppalock via a 24 kilometre rising main and stored in the Caledonia Reservoir approximately 5 kilometres
south of the town.

For further water resource information on the Coliban System (Northern) see our monthly Water Summaries.

Water treatment

Raw water is pumped directly from Lake Eppalock or gravitated from the Caledonia Reservoir to the treatment plant located in Heathcote.

Water is treated by coagulation, flocculation, clarification and filtration after which is disinfected and stored in a roofed clearwater tank prior to being gravitated to the Heathcote reticulation system. The clearwater storage tank has the capacity of 91 kilolitres. The plant can treat up to 6.5 megalitres a day.

The treated water is pumped from the clearwater storage to an elevated 1.6 megalitre storage tank. The water is gravitated to the Heathcote low level reticulation system, then pumped to the high level reticulation system and then into the Tooborac storage facility.

In 2012 the Tooborac storage facility was upgraded with the installation of two 60 kilolitre water storage tanks and the construction of a sodium hypochlorite disinfection system with remote monitoring and control.

For more information see the Tooborac Storage and Disinfection Upgrade project page.

Wastewater

There is no sewerage system for the township of Tooborac.

Townships without sewerage systems generally have septic tanks or other onsite wastewater systems to treat and dispose of, or recycle domestic wastewater at unsewered sites.

There is an EPA Code of Practice for Onsite Wastewater Management and the local councils are responsible for the developing and managing domestic wastewater programs and plans. Further information on onsite wastewater is available on the EPA website.

Water restrictions

Permanent Water Saving Rules (PWSR) apply.

PWSR are a set of five common sense water rules that are in place at all times when water restrictions are not in force.
