Sewer Blockages

> What causes blockages

Without realising it, you could be contributing to blocked pipes, overflows and environmental pollution. Sewer blockages are costly to clean up and are a risk to the environment and waterways.

Common causes of blockages include fats, oils, grease, nappies, sanitary items, 'flushable' wet wipes, food scraps and tree roots.

Only the three Ps - pee, poo and (loo) paper should be flushed down the toilet. All other items do not break down in the sewer system and contribute to sewer blockages.

To learn more about what you can do to help prevent blockages and overflows, see our Bag it, bin it, don't flush it fact sheet or for information about tree roots and the sewer network visit our Wastewater page.

> How to know if there is a blockage

When a blockage occurs you may notice slow draining toilets or drains, bubbling noises or overflow from your internal plumbing or the Overflow Relief Gully located in your yard.

> Who to contact

If you think there is a blockage in your sewer system please call our Customer Support Team at any time on 1300 363 200. We will ask you some questions about the issue.

In most cases if it appears the blockage is in your section of responsibility, or it is during business hours, we may ask you to call a plumber or drain cleaner and recommend that you check our Inducted Plumber and/or Drain Cleaner Register on this page.

If we think the blockage is in the House Connection Branch (HCB) or it is outside business hours we may send our crews to assess the blockage.

In some cases a plumber or drain cleaner may not be able to clear the blockage in the HCB and our crews will attend the site.
